Whta's your TQ?

How do you like them apples?

Let's play a game of word association. I'll list a few words and you say the first thing that comes to mind:
Apricot
Orange
Apple
Blackberry

If you are thinking fruit, then I am blowing you a raspberry! If you are thinking computers, phones or networks, then congratulations, you're technically correct! I know Apricot was stretching it a tad as this particular computer manufacturer ceased to exist in the early 1990s but I didn't want to make it too easy for you.

Technology has moved on at such a pace in the last 20 years that most of us are left with a glazed expression and an uncomfortable feeling of inadequacy as experts explain why wireless has made a comeback and why Bluetooth doesn't require a trip to the dentist.

But worry not, Web Watch is here to help. We are going to improve your TQ this week. TQ? What's that, I hear you ask. It's your Technology Quotient. Your IQ may be up there with Einstein and Newton, but these days, if your TQ is two apples short of a strudel you need to get in touch with your inner technophile.

From explaining the difference between spitting and phishing to revealling the secrets behind HDTV and RSS, whatsyourtq.com will tell you what you need to know. You can swot up on the latest acronymns, products and fads. You may even get to know your lunchbox from your sandbox!

For the more IT savvy, there are some hints and tips that may prove useful including how to speed up your PC and how to make your laptop battery last that little bit longer.

Once you're confident that your TQ is up to scratch, the quiz will test your new-found skills and let you know whether you are a hot-shot or a dead-beat in the technological world. Whether you're deemed to be the techy-genius or a feeble-minded fool on the TQ scale, you stand a chance of winning a 30gb iPod for your trouble.

Of course, there is commercial aspect of the site. It is sponsored by one of the largest online payment systems, PayPal, and the internet magazine, Web User. I assume, as they ask for your gender, age and geographic area, the results of the test are being used to give them an idea of how we are coping with the advances thrust upon us from geek-city. That's not a bad idea but sometimes the educational aspect of the site is lost amongst the recommendations of what kit to buy and prompts to go to the WebUser site. However, I managed to ignore them and I am sure many of you will do the same.

Lastly, and just for fun, there is a 'Cyber Supermarket' game for your entertainment. This game is infuriating in the extreme. If you suffer with high blood pressure, don't go here. The game is dull, boring and frustrating. And my opinion has nothing to do with the fact that I am no good at it!
